My biggest career win for sure, says captain Luke Prokop

2. 7. 2018 | David Simon, Vojtech Jurak
The captain of Canada West Luke Prokop led his team through the whole tournament to the U16 title at the Junior World Cup. His team won the gold medal game 3–1 over Slovakia.

It took them more than 28 minutes to score the first goal and they were down by one for a few minutes in the second period. But team Canada West showed its inner strength and turned the score to get the last and sweetest victory. “It was pretty intense. The Slovaks gave it everything they had but in the end, I think we worked hard and believed that we can do anything to win,” Luke Prokop said.

“The game was pretty difficult. The Czechs gave us a really good battle in the last primary round game. We were prepared for this one but we didn’t know how hard the Slovaks were going to be because we didn’t play them before. They put up a big fight but in the end, we just wanted more and more and got the victory,” thought the captain about the gold medal match. Canada West remained the only team at the tournament that didn’t lose a single game. “It’s awesome, my biggest career win for sure. I have had some before but this is definitely the top.”

Prokop was one of the leaders of the Canadian team and as a top defender was also awarded by the organizers. “I didn’t really know at that time what was the award for, I just went there, shaking everyone’s hands. It was a team effort any of my teammates could get this award. It’s fantastic, really an honour to get it for myself.”

As the young player said, he and his team had a good time in the Czech Republic. “It was an unbelievable experience, the city of Zlin hosted a phenomenal tournament with everything. The competition was phenomenal. I am proud to be a part of it.”
